Beauty Myths
We’ve all heard the beauty ‘secrets’ passed down from generation to generation. We’ve probably passed them on to our own children! Although we may swear by putting cucumber on our eyes, or mayonnaise in our hair, how much good is it really doing? Here are a few more beauty myths and truths…

Beauty myth 1
Eating excess sugar causes wrinkles
Beauty fact - Sugar doesn’t directly cause wrinkles. If somebody eats a predominantly sugar-based diet it is not likely to be the sugar which causes bad skin but the resulting lack of healthy, antioxidant rich foods in the diet. Similarly a poor diet, such as crash dieting, or fat-free diets can lead to premature wrinkling because of the evaporation of fat cells in the face which can leave you with sagging jowls and dark under eye circles. As nutritionist Henrietta Norton explained last month, it’s all about an all-round balance – not a detox cutting out lots of types of food or one which involves a lot of sugar. Instead, it should be a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. But with the best intentions in the world, we can’t always eat the most nutritious foods every day. The easiest way is to combine a healthy diet with taking nutritional supplements every day.

Beauty myth 2
Split ends can be repaired with good hair-care products
Beauty fact – Unfortunately even the best hair products cannot repair already damaged hair. In the past people have even believed that burning the ends will help cure split ends – suffice to say this definitely doesn’t work! Dry hair tends to suffer more, but there are many other causes ranging from colouring, heat-styling and over-brushing, It’s important to remember that nutrition plays a key role in the health of your hair. A dry scalp will cause splitting faster as there is not enough lubrication in the hair follicle and a low fat diet will cause hair to become dull and more vulnerable. To give your hair the best chance, ensure you eat a healthy, varied diet and give your hair a helping hand with a carefully balanced supplement which contains all it needs to grow, be strong and shiny. Our hair and nail daily vitamin supplement contains over 18 carefully balanced micro-nutrients including Opti-MSM to aid the production of keratin, the protein building blocks of strong, lustrous hair and healthy nails. Plus a range of B-complex vitamins, organic silica (to help strengthen) and apricot kernel oil (to boost hair texture and shine).

Beauty myth 3
I don’t need to use a separate cleanser if I use an exfoliator
Beauty fact – Exfoliating scrubs are not the same as traditional cleansers. A cleanser should always be used first to remove all traces of surface debris, dirt and make-up. Exfoliating is an essential step in any regime as it helps to remove the top layers of skin which are already dead, to reveal younger, more radiant skin cells. Skin does naturally regenerate to some extent, but this process rapidly slows as we get older. Therefore, exfoliation is particularly important for more mature skin. Furthermore, there is no point in spending money on moisturisers or advanced anti-ageing treatments unless you regularly exfoliate. Our skin brightening facial exfoliator is specifically developed for more mature skin which tends to be a bit more delicate. The natural exfoliating particles from papaya extract, rice seed and grape seed extract help gently lift the top layers of the skin. Also with naturally derived cleansers coconut oil, sweet almond oil and olive oil, plus soothing organic chamomile and skin-conditioning borage oil.
