Skincare is a huge international industry, with the big brands pending an absurd amount of money on expensive advertising campaigns. They often claim they can make wrinkles disappear, or miraculously take you back to your youth (so long as you can afford the expensive price tag!)
The world of skincare can be a baffling minefield, so to help you, here are the 10 commandments you should follow when it comes to choosing your skincare. Bear these in mind when watching adverts, reading about the latest ‘miracle’ ingredient or walking past make-up counters and you’ll be one step closer to choosing the products which really CAN make a realistic difference to the health and appearance of your skin.
Thou shalt not:
1. Believe expensive means better quality and or guaranteed results
Many of us believe that if a product is inexpensive it cannot possibly give the results of a product costing fi ve times as much. The reality is that cheaper products can be just as effective, if not more so. At nurture, we pride ourselves on the fact our products are permanently lower prices than most other brands and tax-free too!
2. Buy a cellulite cream, nor shalt thou assume it’s possible to dissolve fat from the outside in, because you absolutely cannot. If these products worked, who would have cellulite?
3. Believe in miracle ingredients that can cure skin-care woes. There is not one anti-ageing product on the market that can completely erase wrinkles. FULL STOP!
4. Believe everything a cosmetics sales person tells you.
5. Long for thy neighbour’s perfect skin – or believe her perfect skin came from a particular product; skin is more complicated than that.
6. Be seduced by every new product or promotion the cosmetics industry creates – most are fads and will be replaced in six month’s time.
7. Get a tan; sun is your enemy – it is the primary cause of skin ageing
It is much harder to turn back the clock once the damage has been done,
so instead, ensure you prevent future damage on a daily basis.
8. Believe there is such a thing as a natural cosmetic (or that natural
means better).
9. Smoke – As well as the potential health concerns, smoking can really take a toll on your skin. Cigarette smoke produces four thousand beauty busting chemical compounds when tobacco burns! Also the nicotine in cigarettes constricts blood vessels and deprives your cells of oxygen and nutrients.
10. Go to sleep without taking off your make-up. Let your skin breathe and clean off all impurities and cosmetics from your face every night. If you wear your make-up regularly to bed, you will notice a lot of fi ne lines developing. Some studies suggest that going to bed with your make-up on can age your skin up to 7 times faster! What better reason to thoroughly cleanse every night?
