Exfoliation is the key to a brighter complexion. No matter what our age, we all have younger, more radiant skin just waiting to be uncovered. The truth is, skin grows from the inside out and as new cells are born they slowly get pushed to the surface before they eventually die and shed off. We asked Roger Rowson, expert formulator of our exfoliator to explain how this process works.
“We’ve all heard about exfoliation, but why is it so important to include in our beauty regimes as we get older? Exfoliation is essentially the skin’s natural process of shedding dead cells. Everyday or so, our bodies naturally exfoliate. A new layer of cells is formed at the bottom of the epidermis and pushes the old skin cells to the surface where they eventually dislodge and flake away.
This cycle of skin cell renewal slows down as we get older and can leave skin looking dull and lifeless. If the old, dead skin cells are not removed, they can clog pores, leading to superficial spots or blackheads. Adding an exfoliator to your skincare routine can provide stimulation of cell renewal, assisting this natural process to encourage fresher, younger looking skin.
Exfoliating skin helps improve penetration and absorption of moisturisers and anti-ageing treatments for maximum results. Even make-up will look better! Exfoliation a few times a week for sensitive skin is all that is usually recommended while an oily skin type will benefi t froma gentle daily exfoliation. It is also helpful to give your skin an occasional respite from exfoliation for a week or so every month, especially if any irritation begins to occur.
